The Atomic Energy Programme in India under Dr Homi Jehangir Bhabha, during its evolution, had the advantage of the professional expertise of several experts. Among them, hardly a few took indelible, firm strides, as Dr Anil Kumar Ganguly did. He was an environmentalist to the core and a born teacher. The contributions of Ganguly to the setting up of the multi-disciplinary health physics sciences will be remembered for ever. Anil Kumar Ganguly was the person whom Homi Bhabha selected from his successful academic perch in radiation chemistry at the University of Notre Dame in USA, where Ganguly was a research associate and colleague of Prof. Magee. His pioneering work there had led to the famous Ganguly–Magee theory.Full Text

The present policy of the Government asking regional electricity grids to absorb all the power generated by renewable power installations, and the thermal power stations to run at lower capacities than their installed values would not only force many thermal power plants to run at power levels much lower than their design values, but also constantly ramp up and down their outputs every day causing more wear and tear of the system. We suggest that the problem can be avoided by running the thermal power plants at their installed capacities, and use the surplus electricity to produce and store onsite hydrogen and oxygen. The stored hydrogen can be subsequently used not only to supplement coal in their own furnaces, but also for a variety of applications such as production of ammonia for fertilizers, as automobile fuel or for any other industrial applications. The ultrapure oxygen may be marketed for medical and other industrial applications.Full Text

Homi J. Bhabha occupies a unique place in the history of India – an outstanding scientist, an institution builder and a visionary. He recognized early the immense potential of nuclear technologies for the public good and went on to establish infrastructure and a robust human resource pipeline, not only to support nuclear physics research but also to develop and deploy nuclear technologies for both power and non-power applications in the country. It is an irony of fate that we lost him in an air crash too early in his life and too early in the history of independent India. It is heartening to note that despite this tragic event, the country has moved forward along the course charted by Bhabha and enters the 21st century with confidence and with an aspiration to become part of the developed world, not only scientifically and technologically but also economically and socially.
